These are things you need to accept and then analyze to see if you're going to be able to survive. So here's a list of things you do/experience as a master's student:
1. Everyone else is smarter than you. They have work experience, they have research papers. They have brains. You don't.
2. Eating expired bread is not wrong.
3. Eating burnt expired bread is not wrong.
4. There is nothing like "what is cheap food in USA". There's only expensive and slightly less expensive.
5. All friendship ends when you download the
splitwise app.
6. Switching off the AC to reduce your electricity bill is not a crime.
7. There are times when you have to choose between bathing, sleeping and eating. You always choose sleeping.
8. You'll walk more than you've walked in your life. You'll miss the bus, you'll be late for class and you'll walk. A LOT.
9. Presentations in the USA are similar to those in India.
10. Indians are EVERYWHERE. So if you come with a mindset of making non-Indian friends, you might want to think again. There's here and they're going to be your friends. You might not like it, but that's how it's going to be.
11. Sleep is for the weak.
12. When someone gives you free food, TAKE IT.
13. Coffee is expensive. But you need coffee.
14. You will be more busy and more awake than you've ever been. You will cry and you will be like, 'why the f*** didn't I just continue/take up the campus placement job". I've been here 3 months and everyone I know has already felt this.
15. The GPA system will make you a b***h. You'll want others to do worse so that your GPA is better. You'll hope for a difficult test so that others do worse than you.
16. You will realize that other Indians are the most competitive people in the world. They WILL NOT share their notes. What the hell happened to nice people? They're probably back in India.
17. Friday midnight assignment deadlines will make sure that you can't have any fun on Fridays.
18. You will burn your utensils. You will burn your food. You will burn your fingers.
19. Diwali is the most depressing time. Even if you hated Diwali in India.
20. You will miss food that you didn't even like back home. This will make you spend a lot of money when you get fed up and want to eat a $4 vadapav.
21. Everything is self-study. Not the India kind of self study. If your internet dies, you don't cry because you can't watch a movie, you cry because you can't google a doubt.
22. Going to the theater to watch a movie will become a luxury activity. Then again, you go a week after the movie releases and at such an odd time that the ticket price is lesser.
23. You will not get along with your room mate at one point or the other. They might be the nicest people, but since you're living with them, there will come a point when you want to kill them, and then yourself.
24. Food will get divided among your room mates. This point hit me the hardest.
25. The concept of open book/ cheat sheet exam is truly exciting and appalling at the same time.
26. To transfer money from India to here is $16 at your end, plus the conversion charge in India. This will make you very upset at some point.
27. Time zones are a bitch.
28. You will sleep and dream of home. Literally. Even if all you wanted was to leave.
29. Your mom/dad/brother will ALWAYS be online on hangout/skype.
30. You will have to eventually accept the fact that you probably wont make as good friends as you did at home. You'll also eventually accept the fact that you hate your friends for sleeping when you're awake. And if they have bad internet connection, you'll hate them even more.
31. You'll get used to the change from "I'm proud of you for scoring so well in your exam" to "I'm proud of you for making rajma"
32. Your electricity/rent bill always seems to be increasing.
33. "Chilling at the library" is a thing.
34. You will marvel at how inexpensive things are in India. 600 rupee meals will sound like heaven.
35. All your final exams/project due dates will be in the same week. For real.
36. Nobody will know who you are. If you were the star of your college, you're in for a rude shock.
37. 'Party schools' are for undergrads. Not for masters students. I cannot stress this point enough.
38. Seniors will be a guiding light. You'd be dead without them.
39. The washing machine WILL shrink your clothes. Most certainly.
40. You create a routine of cooking, then cleaning, then eating. Because you don't want to eat and then wash the utensils.
41. "We will clean our house regularly" is a lie. "We will cook everyday" is a lie. "We will get proper sleep" is a lie. "We will not miss our parents" is a lie.
PS: If you're not experiencing any of these things, you're probably not in a very good school.
